SINGEL AMSTERDAM
Amsterdam's special intimate character is best reflected in the narrow streets of the old city centre, where much of the population still goes about its business. This modern liberal people who live in a medieval city remains fascinating to watch. While there are reminders of the glorious past (gabled houses, noble brick façades clad with sandstone, richly decorated comices, old historic monuments, towers, palaces and churches and the beautiful music of carillions and barrel organs) the realities of life in the modern metropolis often belie this romantic image. Amsterdam is a great experience in the largest sense of word.

The Night Watch, Rembrandt van Rijn ( 1642 )
The Golden Age was a very rich period in Dutch history, in which Dutch trade, science, art and military were among the most acclaimed in the world. The Dutch dominated trade with Japan and China with the Dutch East India Company and also were able to gain control of the trade between European countries. This had the effect that the national industries continued to expand as well, laborers and workers were generally paid better than the rest of Europe and enjoyed comparatively high living standards with also a very high tax system. With this public money the Dutch architecture was taken to a new height in the Golden Age whose citizens of Amsterdam still take advantage with tourism these days.
