Amsterdam - Venice of the North

Amsterdam consists of more than one hundred kilometers of canals, about 90 islands and 1500 bridges. They call Amsterdam "Venice of the North" The three main canals, the Herengracht, Prinsengracht and the Keizersgracht were dug in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age. There are more than 1550 monumental buildings on these canals. In 2010, the Amsterdam canal belt was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It underlines what we already knew: The canals of Amsterdam are a world-class monument!

The Dutch culture

Everyone needs to visit Amsterdam at least once in his or her life. While still attractive to backpackers and young singles looking for the easy life in the "brown" cafes, the city is much more than just that experience. The architecture is quintessentially Dutch, with flowers and gardens planted in every available plot of land, and picturesque canals winding through busy city streets. The museums are treasure troves of art, culture and history. The restaurants have become as multi-cultural as anywhere in Europe, with French, Italian, Indonesian and American offerings easily found and offering a wide range of well prepared and artfully presented foods. It's easy to get around on foot, or by tram or bus. The nightlife is plentiful and - the Dutch are tall and good looking!
